Freedom of Information
The Freedom of Information Act 2000
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 received royal assent on 30th November 2000. The purpose of the Act is to promote greater openness by public authorities. It aims to do this by making provision for the disclosure of information held by public bodies or by persons providing services for them.
The Freedom of Information Act will amend the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Public Records Act 1958 and will supersede the current Code of Practice on Access to Government Information 1997.
The Freedom of Information Act does not supersede the protection given under the Data protection Act 1998.
